Left Alliance: an immediate ceasefire in Gaza is needed

The Left Alliance condemns the terrorist organisation Hamas and its terrorist attack on more than a thousand Israeli civilians. This is a major massacre of Israeli civilians. All hostages taken by Hamas must be released immediately.

Israel has no right to violate international law in its response to the Hamas attack. The Left Alliance condemns all attacks on civilians. The international community must now strongly demand and work for a ceasefire in Gaza. The UN estimates that more than 4 000 people, most of them civilians, have already been killed so far in Israeli attacks on Gaza. The UN estimates that 1 873 children have died. Finland must also declare its support for the calls for an immediate ceasefire and compliance with international law.

The Palestinians in Gaza are living in the midst of a humanitarian disaster. As a result of Hamas attacks, Israel has imposed a total blockade on the area, which means that the people of Gaza have no water, electricity, fuel or food. The total blockade is in violation of international law. It has already been condemned by the UN and the EU. Humanitarian aid and access to food, water, electricity, medicines and fuel must be guaranteed immediately.

Violence and military action will not solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Achieving lasting peace requires political action to restore the credibility of the two-state solution, an end to the blockade of Gaza, an end to the occupation of Palestine and international recognition of the Palestinian state.Finland must increase its humanitarian aid to the Palestinians, as the need for assistance is greater than ever.

Terrorism is unacceptable under any circumstances and nothing justifies the killing of innocent civilians. Ordinary civilians are not responsible for the actions of the State of Israel and Hamas, and collective revenge in any form is unacceptable. The Left expresses its deep concern at the rise in both anti-Semitism and Islamophobia as a result of the situation in the Middle East and is systematically acting against all hate speech and the violence that springs from it.
